Bible Book: Genesis
Chapter: 8
Verse: 14 – 17

Sunday is the 30th commemoration of International AIDS Candlelight Memorial Sunday and also Pentecost Sunday. This litany (in Afrikaans or English) and a video and visual reflection on the song can be downloaded from the CABSA webpage.

In an effort to combine one of the texts of the Lexicon with the AIDS Candlelight Ceremony we have created this liturgical element to use within your Pentecost Sunday Liturgy. It is a litany combining the theology of Romans 8:14-17 with the well known fruits of the Spirit of Galatians 5:22-23. You can use this litany with one leader and the congregation in response or you can use different leaders.

The litany starts and ends with a broader understanding of the Spirit. The Greek word ‘pneuma’ can be translated as Spirit, Breath or Wind.

We recommend that a candle being lit with every prayer for a fruit of the Spirit. These candles can be arranged within a red AIDS ribbon at an appropriate place within your place of worship. With this litany we also suggest that the song “Ukuthula” is sung, or you can download the video with the lyrics to play as a moment of prayer after the litany. May the Spirit move you to solidarity with those who live with or are affected by HIV or AIDS.

A litany of solidarity with and through the Spirit:

Leader: Come, Holy Spirit,
All: Fill us.

Leader: Come, Holy Breath,
All: Live in us.

Leader: Come, Holy Wind,
All: Move through us.

Leader: “For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God. The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again.” [Rom 8:14-15a]
All: Where we are led by other impulses we become slaves again and our way of being is guided by fear.

Leader: Where we are guided by prejudice, [Gal 5:22-23]
All: Fill us with love.

Leader: Where we are guided by pessimism,
All: Fill us with joy.

Leader: Where we are guided by misunderstanding,
All: Fill us with peace.

Leader: Where we are guided by superficial quick-fixes,
All: Fill us with patience.

Leader: Where we are guided by self-interest,
All: Fill us with kindness.

Leader: Where we are guided by apathy,
All: Fill us with goodness.

Leader: Where we are guided by convenience,
All: Fill us with faithfulness.

Leader: Where we are guided by complacency,
All: Fill us with meekness.

Leader: Where we are guided by temptation,
All: Fill us with self-control.

Leader: Come, Holy Spirit,
All: Fill us.

Leader: Come, Holy Breath,
All: Live in us.

Leader: Come, Holy Wind,
All: Move through us.

All: Amen.
